The alleged leader of the Petit Bar criminal gang, quadriplegic, released from prison

Jacques Santoni, quadriplegic and alleged leader of the Corsican criminal gang of Petit Bar was released on Thursday, September 10, for medical reasons, announced the specialized interregional jurisdiction (JIRS) of Marseille and his lawyer, Friday, September 10.

Jacques Santoni, 43, disabled since a motorcycle accident in 2003, was indicted in January by a Marseille JIRS investigating judge and imprisoned, in particular for extortion in an organized gang, aggravated money laundering and criminal association in a vast financial investigation linked to this criminal gang.

The investigative chamber of the Aix-en-Provence Court of Appeal, chaired by Christine Mée, “Ordered his release without delay without any further consideration, on the basis of his state of health, which is incompatible with detention”, welcomed his lawyer, Me Pascal Garbarini, confirming information from Corsica-Morning. According to him, “17 judicial experts have pronounced on the case of Jacques Santoni and have all said, individually or in college, that the state of health is incompatible with detention”.

Mr. Santoni, implicated in several cases related to island organized crime, is subject to judicial control prohibiting him from going to Corsica and from coming into contact with his alleged accomplices, themselves indicted, said his lawyer.

Obligation to pay a deposit of 300,000 euros

Added to this is the obligation to pay a deposit of 300,000 euros, the obligation to set up home in Paris and check in there weekly, the prohibition on holding a weapon and leaving the national territory, a specified a judicial source.

The Advocate General had requested continued detention “Taking into account his personality” and had requested a new medical expertise. “I am pleased that the court took into account the reasoned situation of Mr. Santoni and made law by leaving aside other considerations which have nothing to do in legal proceedings”added Me Garbarini.

At a previous, denied release hearing in early July, Mr.e Garbarini had asserted the medical certificate of a doctor from the National Public Health Establishment of Fresnes, where he was imprisoned, who assessed his situation “Durably and definitively incompatible with detention”.
