That transport does not end with your pocket

After more than two years of pandemic with a home office model, the return to the workplace has become a reality, according to the SherlockHR analysis, 60% of organizations in Mexico want a return to a full-time face-to-face scheme.

The return to the workplace represents a challenge for the employees, who are at the crossroads of spending on transportation from their home to the employment center, which was previously part of the family budget, today could represent a decrease in the pockets of the workers .

Pre-pandemic figures indicate that the country’s households allocate about 19% of their income to transportation, that is, the average spending on mobility is equivalent to 1,350 pesos per month, according to the Urban Mobility Index (IMU), of the Institute Mexican for Competitiveness (Imco).

When adding the average amount that a person spends on transportation per year, the expense is equivalent to just over 16,000 pesos per year, an amount that could be used for other purposes, a savings fund or even vacations somewhere in the republic.

Only in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico, 34.56 million trips are made, of which 15.57 are by transport and 6.6 million are by car, lasting between half an hour and two hours, data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography indicate.

Users who regularly move from different points of the cities use at least two means to move, so a user within Mexico City spends between 15 and 20 pesos per day, however, an inhabitant of the areas adjoining the city spend between 40 to 50 pesos daily.

Taking into account that currently the cost of the Metro Collective Transportation System, the most used by the population, is five pesos; followed by the metrobus with a cost of six pesos; the Route 100 truck goes from 2 to 4 pesos; while the different microbuses vary, that is, the base rate is 5 pesos and, depending on the destination, it can reach up to 8 pesos, while the transport rate in the State of Mexico is 12 pesos.

One of the alternatives to reduce spending on transportation is to ask workplaces if they have any free transportation service, since as a result of the pandemic the number of companies that offer private means of transportation to their employees increased 50 percent .

If the company does not have the benefit, drawing routes between co-workers who use their own car can be an alternative that reduces the cost of all the companions as well as the travel time and carbon dioxide emissions.

Like organizing routes with co-workers. Trip planning will allow transport users to improve transfer times and thereby avoid extra expenses due to delays. There are currently different free applications that allow knowing transfer times on public transport, such as Moovit and Renfe.

The use of a bicycle can also benefit the user’s finances due to the lower purchase and maintenance costs of the vehicle, in Mexico City there are 128 kilometers of bicycle lanes and more than 1,300 bicycle parking lots on public roads which operate 365 days a year. free of charge in addition to having surveillance cameras.
