Tech companies got the worst of it

Once again it was the companies in the technology sector that lost the most this Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange. Only the big seven (Apple, Amazon, Tesla, Alphabet, Meta Platform, Netflix and Microsoft) lost in combined market value about 547,419 million dollars.

Unlike other times, this time the contagion spread to all of Wall Street, where even the 11 sectors of the S&P 500 had significant losses, dragging down most companies.

Thursday was a particularly bad day for companies in the e-commerce sector, reporting quarterly results below expectations. Mercado Libre (-10.75%), eBay (-11.72%), Shopify (-14.91%), and Etsy (-16.83%) had heavy losses.

Other companies that fell were Nike (-5.89%), Home Depot (5.14%) and the US aircraft manufacturer, Boeing (-4.14%).

The negative session reached, although to a lesser extent, the stock markets in Mexico.

In the Mexican Stock Exchange, the worst falls affected several sectors.

Cementos Mexicanos (Cemex) (-4.81%) and Cementos Chihuahua (-4.44%) of construction and materials, accompanied by the media giant Grupo Televisa (-4.75%).

For its part, the low-cost airline, Volaris, lost 4.32% on Thursday, while the industrial conglomerate Grupo Carso, owned by Carlos Slim, had a drop in the price of its papers of 3.87 percent.
