The Swiss drug agency, Swissmedic, approved on Friday immunization against the Covid-19 of children from the age of five with the Pfizer-Biontech messenger RNA vaccine, Comirnaty.
“The results of clinical trials show that vaccination is safe and effective” among children aged 5 to 11 years, who until now could not be vaccinated, according to Swissmedic.
Comirnaty is administered in two dose of 10 micrograms with three weeks of interval, “which corresponds to a third of the dose administered to adolescents and adults”, emphasizes Swissmedic.
A clinical trial “still ongoing with more than 1,500 participants shows that this vaccine against Covid-19 almost completely prevents serious diseases caused by the virus. SARS-CoV-2 in children from 5 to 11 years old, “the Swiss agency reported.
So far, only the kids older than 12 years could be vaccinated.
By giving the green light to vaccinate children from the age of 5, Switzerland joins Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain.
Canada and the United States, as well as Israel and Chile, also authorized the vaccination of children from this age.
