Survey: 67% of Spaniards are committed to regulating prostitution

The thorny debate about the regulation or abolition of prostitution that confronts the feminist movement does not generate consensus in the parliamentary arena either. Government partners have polarized views on how to legislate this activity, which is still illegal in Spain. The misgivings between the PSOE and United We Can were evident during the approval of the ‘only yes is yes’ law – the socialists ended up withdrawing their amendments on pimping and locative third party to avoid a defeat by the Executive – and during the processing of the bill to abolish prostitution, promoted by the PSOE, endorsed by the PP and with divergences within United We Can, since the seven deputies of the commons stood out. But what do the Spanish think?

According to the latest GESOP survey for the Prensa Ibérica newspapers, 67.7% are in favor of prostitution being regulated. Only 15.9% of those surveyed believe that it should be prohibited and 8.3% consider that it should remain as it is, that is, in a legal vacuum. It should be noted that the position is practically the same depending on the sex of those asked, since 67.3% of men and 68.2% of women are committed to regulating sex work.

Yes there are distinctions by age: young people between 18 and 29 years old are divided – 41.2% believe that it should be prohibited and 49.3% be subject to the law – while in the rest of the age groups support for the regulation is around 70 %.

The position of laying the foundations for legislation is the majority in all the voting pockets. And that collides with some postulates, since despite the abolitionist position of the PSOE and the PP, their voters are more likely to want to set rules -70.5% and 65.8%, respectively-. But, by far, pro-independence voters are the staunchest supporters of regulation: 92.9% of those who opted for Junts per Catalunya in 2019 and 79.3% of those who opted for ERC.

The voters of extreme right they believe that prostitution should be regulated (70.9%) or remain as it is (14.5%), while Cs voters prefer that it be subject to the law (68.8%).
