Stolen Minivan Driver Faces Multiple Charges Following Macleod Trail Accidents – Calgary | The Canadian News

A man remains in hospital after multiple hit-and-run crashes Monday afternoon and faces charges after the sequence of events.

The Calgary Police Service received multiple reports of a minivan driving erratically south on Macleod Trail around 1:30 p.m. Police said the minivan was stolen from the 7500 block of South Macleod Trail.

In a press release, police said the driver struck at least seven vehicles and continued to drive.

After colliding with a northbound car turning left on southeast Southport Road, the minivan rolled after colliding with an island of traffic. He stopped after cutting a couple of large street signs.

The driver, a man in his 30s, received life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital where he remains serious but stable on Tuesday.

The last car that was hit while turning left stopped at a traffic light and the driver and passenger were not seriously injured, according to police.

The people in the other vehicles who were struck were treated by EMS for minor injuries.

Police closed southbound Macleod Trail shortly after the collisions and, according to the city’s transportation department, it reopened around 7:45 p.m.

Police say speed is considered a factor in the minivan’s collision. The minivan driver has pending charges of motor vehicle theft, dangerous driving, and multiple crashes and races.
