South Korea and Mexico City, the guests at the Cervantino’s 50

South Korea and Mexico City will be the Guests of Honor next year at the International Cervantino Festival (FIC), in a very special edition, the 50th, which will take place from October 12 to 30, 2022.

This was announced this Saturday morning by the director of the Fiesta del Espíritu, Mariana Aymerich Ordóñez, from the Juárez Theater in the city of Guanajuato, in a conference with the presence of the Secretary of Federal Culture, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, and the Head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, as well as Jeong-in Suh, ambassador to Mexico of the announced country, among other authorities.

“We have been seeing an era that made us rethink everything. And if there is a way to transform reality, it is the way of art. And the Cervantino International Festival gave proof of this in the most difficult times, in which we had to cover our smiles, stop meeting, since culture summons and brings together. But what did not cease at any time was the spirit of uniting realities, of uniting possibilities between the artistic community and its audiences ”, declared Frausto Guerrero.

He added that next year will celebrate 100 years of Mexican muralism and 60 years of diplomatic relations with South Korea.

Korea, Frausto Guerrero added, “is a country that has extraordinary ancestral manifestations and is going to show that cultural richness, but it has a contemporary cultural impulse that is going to be that the new generations also shake themselves and that they come to the FIC from the youngest, even those who appreciate all the cultural manifestations that a cultural power such as Korea can display ”.

He added that in the festival’s five decades, the Mexican capital had not been invited. “Perhaps we take it for granted that the capital has its own dynamics and that is why it has never been invited. It seems very important to us that the different identities that coexist and that have lived for hundreds of years in that capital are shown with enormous dominance, with the contemporary, with the manifestations that range from food culture, design, graphic and performing arts, the music. Mexico City also has a unique capacity to summon the public space ”.

For his part, the Korean ambassador to Mexico declared: “culture is the way in which we, as a society, reflect on who we are, where we have been and where we hope to be (…) I invite you to enrich with your participation and presence in the next edition of the FIC. See you on this stage to celebrate our meeting and our shared values ”.

Finally, the head of Government of Mexico City reviewed great minds born and emblematic residents of the Mexican capital in all their expressions, from feathers such as Octavio Paz, Elena Garro and Carlos Monsiváis, to musical groups such as Botellita de Jerez and Caifanes, without forgetting strongholds of cinematography such as Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Emmanuel Lubezki.

“Mexico City is more than the city and its own culture, it is a melting pot of our country, it is the capital of our country, it is also a space for contemporary art, where there are not only national but international representations of different levels. So, if you will allow me, in this 50th edition of the Cervantino, not only will the great culture of the city be expressed from pre-Columbian times to the melting pot that is represented today, but it will also be a piece of each part of the republic. That in this number 50 the city is what it is, the representation of our Mexico ”, he declared.

The image of the 50th edition of the FIC was designed by the visual artist Rafael López Castro, a pioneer of the poster in Mexico.
