Even if clowns were legion, they would hardly get a smile from me today. Grief over the death of Stephen Sondheim is big in the theater community around the world. And I am no exception. Desirée Armfeldt, the protagonist of ‘A little night music’, asked, implored, begged for the entrance of the clowns (Where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns. Send in the clowns) to cushion the pain of his failure, vital and loving at the same time, resorting to the circus custom of making the clown troupe rush in to hide any unexpected damage or accident with their jokes and occurrences. So I would now need an army of clowns to cushion the penalty of the disappearance of the genius.
