Shoppers line up to buy last-minute items at local stores

Many people flock to local stores to buy last minute items before Christmas.

Historically, this is one of the busiest shopping days of the year, as people buy food and alcohol for the holidays. Even with the ongoing pandemic, people are planning to celebrate the holidays and enjoy good food.

“Christmas is Christmas. You can’t cancel Christmas,” said Carmine Caccioppoli, co-owner of Vincenzo’s. “We will get through it and we will all have to commit a little bit again.”

Dozens of people were waiting in line to get into Vincenzo’s in Waterloo on Thursday. Last week, the province announced capacity limits of 50 percent for companies. For Vincenzo’s, it means that only 60 people are allowed in the store at a time.

“Honestly, inside the store, mobility is a little bit easier,” Caccioppoli said of the capacity limits.

Under the new restrictions, indoor meetings are limited to 10 people, while outdoor meetings can have up to 25 people.

Other stores including Walmart, Superstore and Costco were also busy Thursday as shoppers picked up holiday supplies.
