Investigators say the victim, identified as Peter Oscar Khan, was in a parking lot in the back of a plaza near Sheppard and Morningside avenues around 3 a.m. Saturday when the suspect approached him, ripped a chain from his neck at gunpoint and shot him. to the.

Police allege the suspect “coincidentally” walked away from the scene after the shooting, but soon found another victim in the same parking lot, also wearing a chain. The suspect is alleged to have also shot the victim and ran away with the jewelry, eventually getting into a vehicle and driving away.

Both men were rushed to the hospital after the shooting. Khan was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival, while the other victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Police say investigators have since determined the same suspect is also responsible for a third “chain rip” robbery committed in the area of Kennedy and Ellesmere roads about 90 minutes before the shooting. No injuries were reported as a result of that robbery.

“This was a very, very tragic incident, a senseless act of violence,” said Det. Sergeant Tiffany Castell told reporters during a Wednesday morning news conference. “Having three robberies, people being held at gunpoint in a span of 90 minutes and someone senselessly losing their life is truly devastating and I am so grateful that we were able to bring this to a successful conclusion in that they are able to seek justice. But that doesn’t bring Mr. Khan back and that doesn’t bring any comfort to the community that they lost someone they really loved.”

peter kahnPolice released surveillance camera footage of the suspect and a vehicle in which he is believed to have fled the scene within 24 hours of the shooting.

Castell said a “keen-eyed officer” with the 41st Division Community Response Unit spotted the suspect vehicle in a parking lot at Kennedy and Ellesmere streets Sunday afternoon, not far from where the previous robbery occurred.

She said police were in the process of impounding the vehicle when a suspect showed up and tried to get inside. She subsequently left on foot, but was apprehended about 15 minutes later after a foot chase.

He was initially charged with robbery-related offenses and was held in custody for a period of 72 hours, but police on Tuesday added a first-degree murder charge in connection with Khan’s death.

Castell said police are continuing to investigate but do not believe Khan was targeted for any reason other than robbery.

“They were property jewelry that was taken from the deceased’s neck and that is why he lost his life, unfortunately because of a chain that he wore around his neck,” he said.

The suspect has been identified by police as 27-year-old Johvan Waldron.
