The PlayStation 5 shortage could continue into the 2021 holiday season.
In a recent interview with The Washington PostPlayStation boss Jim Ryan reiterated that, as previously reported, Sony is competing with many other companies for the semiconductors needed to make the PS5s.
Additionally, Ryan noted that “demand was higher than we anticipated,” which, “coupled with the complexities of supply chain issues, resulted in slightly less supply than we initially anticipated.”
That said, Ryan said The Financial Times that the shortage is continually improving. “It will get better every month throughout 2021,” Ryan said. “The pace of improvement in the supply chain will increase throughout the year, so by the time we get to the second half of [2021], you’re going to see really decent numbers. “
However, Ryan wouldn’t promise that there would be enough PS5 units for everyone who wants one over the holidays. Talking to Ars TechnicaBen Bajarin, an analyst at Creative Strategies, also said he expects the semiconductor shortage to continue into 2022, noting that by “[Sony] to catch up, the demand has to decrease. “
Microsoft, for its part, has said it expects the Xbox Series X / S shortage to continue through at least June.
