Semarnat receives Declaration of Environmental Impact of Section 5 of the Mayan Train


Cancun, QRoo.- After several months of starting the works, the Environmental Impact Statement of the Section 5 south of the Mayan Train, which runs from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.

The procedure was formally entered on May 17 before the Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk (DGIRA) of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), but the document has not yet been made public in the Ecological Gazette of the latter dependency.

The section submitted for evaluation was assigned for construction through a public bidding process to Mexico Group Y Acciona Construction for an amount of 17,815 million pesos.

Until now, the definitive outline of this section is unknown, since in January of this year the newly appointed director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), Javier May, announced a change of plans, to move the railway seven kilometers to the west of Carmen beachwith which the train will no longer run to the center of highway 307 as previously announced by the federal government.

In addition, the Section 5 Sur faces at least a provisional suspension, so the works are on hold until the hearing that will determine whether the definitive suspension is granted or if the works are resumed at the end of May.
