Cancun, QR. The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) started the process of public consultation of the Section 4 of the Maya Trend which will run throughout the month of November.
The project was entered into environmental evaluation At the end of September, and as of October of this year, Semarnat began the environmental evaluation process, which includes submitting the work to a consultation process so that the community and other interested parties can express their opinions or objections in this regard. Those who wish to participate can do so in the following league: http://consultaspublicas.semarnat.gob.mx/proyectopublico/?fbclid=IwAR2ebEs9Bi7C_t_lug_5gmpPrDFaHq4gy-yH9_950wnFWSeazVsHrIMMRnc
Section 4 of the Mayan Train comprises a route of 239.5 kilometers between Merida and Cancún, with a planned investment of 25,000 million pesos; It also supposes a total area of displacement of 1,749 hectares, 410 hectares of affectation and change of land use in 317.28 hectares, according to what is read in the Environment impact manifestation (MY).
This section will have five stations in Chichén Itzá, Valladolid and Xibalbá in the state of Yucatán; as well as in Leona Vicario and Nuevo Xcan in Quintana Roo. The road will be located parallel to the Cancun-Mérida toll highway operated by ICA, the works also include a reengineering of this road.
The construction of the railway includes complementary works, such as five railway stations, two service areas for highways, four slopes, four junctions, 61 drainage works, a maintenance base, eight returns, 26 underpasses and 55 livestock crossings, 19 wildlife crossings, 62 existing access roads and a service road. For this, a change of land use is requested in an area of 317.28 hectares in addition to the existing right of way.
It is further specified that the railroad track that will connect with Cancun has a 40-meter right-of-way, however, currently the highway has a 7-meter wide type C2 highway, therefore, to integrate the infrastructure of the Mayan Train, an extension of the right of way of 20 meters is requested to maintain a constant along the route of 60 meters of right of way, which will have a length of 15,275 kilometers.
Unlike the MIA of the Section 1 in which it was specified that the number of trees that would be affected by the work, this data is not mentioned on this occasion.
The entry of the MIA to Semarnat occurs one year and three months after the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, would give the flag to the works of this section, which already has a considerable progress of work with clearing of vegetation on one side of the Mérida-Cancun highway, according to the weekly reports presented by the same Fonatur.
According to the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection (LGEEPA), the Environment impact manifestation It is a necessary requirement before the construction of the project begins, since it falls within the provisions established in the regional modality.
Even in the MIA of Section 4, section 1.1.3, it is stated verbatim: “It is foreseen that the construction works will begin once the authorizations regarding environmental impact are obtained. The duration for the execution of the works including the infrastructure and equipment tests is approximately three years ”, however, the works are already a considerable percentage of progress.
Fonatur states in the MIA that Section 4 is made up of three sub-sections: (a) Izamal railroad with a length of 9,728 kilometers until it meets federal highway 180D Kantunil-Cancún; (b) railroad plus highway 180D Kantunil-Cancún federal highway, of 214,535 kilometers, including the right of way (parallel to the axis of the median), which is currently in operation, and in which the necessary adjustments will be made so that On the north side (Cancun-Kantunil direction) there is an A4 highway in the direction of Mérida and on the south side (Kantunil-Cancun direction) the Mayan Train operates in the Cancun direction.
Finally: (c) Cancun railroad, which will end in the opening of a new section with a length of 15,275 kilometers, where it separates from Highway 180D and will end approximately at the city’s airport. Fonatur anticipates that “it will promote the regeneration of the vegetation cover through the implementation of the Soil Conservation and Reforestation Program with native species of the region to improve the functioning and integrity of the biology corridors and the connectivity of the landscape ”.
