SALMON ARM – The main doors of many public schools in Salmon Arm remained closed Tuesday, but the school district says it has lifted the “retention and security” measures in place since a disturbing protest last week.

A statement posted on the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District website says the measures were imposed on Friday to prevent unauthorized access after opponents of COVID-19 vaccination entered multiple schools.

A scheduled professional development day kept students out of class on Monday, but the school doors remained locked as a precaution.

The district says it has encouraged schools to keep major entry points closed, especially at elementary schools.

The statement from district superintendent Donna Kriger says that when possible, more supervision will be added to the playgrounds during recess and noon.

Kriger said last week that the school district would work with the RCMP to ensure that protesters are not allowed on school property.
