The Saskatoon Police Service is warning residents of a phone scam in which the scammer claims that a family member is in trouble with the police and needs financial help.

A statement from the police service said they have received complaints about this scam that has recently resurfaced.

The scammer claims that he is an officer or lawyer and that money is needed to pay a bond or a fine. They then tell the victim how to send money.

“The SPS does not contact people in this way,” the statement said.

Police say that if someone receives a phone call of this nature, be very careful, especially when asked to send emergency money.

“Ask the caller important questions to try to verify their identity. Ask for a phone number to call the ‘relative’ once you have consulted with other relatives, ”the police suggest.

If fraud is suspected, residents are asked to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center or the Saskatoon Police Service.
