Sánchez agrees to meet with Aragonès to redirect the espionage crisis

  • They speak two minutes before receiving Von der Leyen in Barcelona and the head of the Generalitat underlines the “seriousness” of the situation

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, had a short informal conversation, lasting just two minutes, before the participation of both in the last day of the annual meeting of the Cercle d’Economia in Barcelona . The two presidents took advantage of the moments prior to the arrival of the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to share impressions at a time of maximum tension between their respective governments due to the case of espionage against independence leaders. Sánchez and Aragonès have agreed to meet to try to redirect the situation.

With a serious gesture, both awaited the arrival of Von der Leyen together with the ministers Miquel Iceta and Raquel Sánchez, the Government delegate in Catalonia, Maria Eugènia Gay, and the president of the Cercle, Javier Faus. Aragonès’ intention was to present Sánchez with the need that, in the current context, both hold a meeting as soon as possible. Sánchez has agreed. However, he seems ruled out that this meeting takes place taking advantage of the Spanish president’s visit to Barcelona, because the Generalitat believes that prior preparation is necessary.

According to Government sources, the ‘president’ has underlined before Sánchez “the seriousness” of the situation, and also that they urgently need to meet face to face and have time to talk. Before that moment, Sánchez and Von der Leyen have held a private meeting for about 20 minutes.

The President of the Government has conveyed to Aragonès the need to “resolve the situation”, and to do it “thinking about the Catalans”. In addition, Sánchez has picked up the glove and has also summoned the ‘president’ to arrange a meeting, according to Executive sources.

For the Generalitat, Sánchez’s willingness to meet “does not change anything.” The ‘president’ has shown his discomfort with the espionage by refusing to applaud the closing speech of the Prime Minister, because “he has not contributed anything new, and for the dialogue to continue there must be trust”.

Before seeing each other at the Cercle meeting, the president of the Generalitat had said in a radio interview that trust in the Government “is broken, to zero”, although he once again ruled out definitively setting aside the negotiation between executives: ” I will not give them the gift of leaving the dialogue table.”
