Russian troops withdraw from Chernobyl nuclear power plant

Russian troops came out of the chernobyl plantwhich they had occupied since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Ukrainian authorities announced on Thursday.

“There are no longer people from outside the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in this territory,” the Ukrainian state agency for the management of the plant area said on Facebook.

Shortly before, the agency had indicated that the russian troops they had begun their departure from the plant, located about 100 kilometers north of kyiv.

Leaving the plant, the Russians “looted the premises, stole equipment and precious objects,” the agency charged.

Ukrainian specialists will inspect the plant in search of potential “explosive objects,” according to the same source.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ceased, as of March 9, to directly receive data from Chernobyl. He was concerned on Sunday about the lack of rotation of the central staff since March 20.

The plant’s number 4 reactor exploded in 1986, causing the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history. It is covered by a double sarcophagus, one built by the Soviets, now damaged, and another more modern, inaugurated in 2019.

The three other reactors at the plant were progressively closed after the catastrophe, the last in 2000.
