Russia launches new military exercises near Ukraine and Crimea

The Russian army on Tuesday launched a new series of exercises near Ukraine and in the annexed Crimean peninsula, with exercises involving 6,000 men, fighter jets and bombers, according to Russian agencies.

It is an operation that includes the “air force (…) and groups of ships of the Black and Caspian Sea Fleet,” said the commander of the Russian forces in the south of the country. Alexander Dvornikov.

According to the TASS agency, 60 fighter jets and bombers are taking part in air force exercises in four regions, including the Crimean peninsula that annexed Russia in 2014 in retaliation for a pro-Western revolution in Ukraine.

This includes coordinating naval and air defense action in the event of missile attacks.

In addition, about 6,000 men are taking part in the exercises to check their combat readiness at bases spread across various regions of southern Russia.

The announcement of the maneuvers comes a few hours after the Kremlin has denounced the warning of thousands of US troops that could be deployed as part of NATO troops in the context of the crisis in Ukraine. Russia sees this as a new “escalation of tensions” by Washington.
