Rigoberta Bandini: “I really like that the iconography of a tit is in the performance of ‘Ay, mama'”

The ‘Benidorm Festival’ continues to advance towards its celebration after knowing the 14 candidates that will compete in the new RTVE music contest, among which is that of Rigoberta Bandini. After succeeding with songs like ‘Perra’, the artist and voice actress has become one of the favorites to represent Spain in Eurovision 2022 with ‘Ay, mama’, a hymn that honors mothers and female empowerment with its highly personal style and unique sound.

At the moment, ‘Ay, mama’ has more than 141,000 views on Spotify in its first days after its launch. YOTELE talks to Rigoberta Bandini about her participation in the first edition of the ‘Benidorm Fest’ and her chances of taking the stage in Turin.

How did you come up with the idea of presenting yourself to the ‘Benidorm Fest’ and opting to represent Spain at Eurovision?

I went through several phases. In the first, he said ‘no’ because he didn’t have time. I didn’t even want to hear about this. When I finished the tour, I had an anxiety that I couldn’t add anything else to the agenda because, in addition, I have a small child. Then I went through a “why not?” Phase. This year is going to be different. If they had told me to hitchhike to Eurovision, it might not have motivated me, but this year when the Benidorm Festival returns, this motivates me even more. The fact that there are cool songs, the atmosphere of now & mldr; It’s so much cooler than going straight. I started to get motivated, but I didn’t have a song, and it caught me right at a difficult moment with my grandmother, with whom I had a very special bond. I would sit at the piano and only super sad songs would come out. He said that was fine, but that he couldn’t kill Europe like this. They are going to die.

And how did ‘Ay, mama’ come out?

I recovered this song that I had composed years ago from a hard disk and that, in some way, also linked me to my grandmother, the matriarch of my family. This is a song that talks about matriarchs and female empowerment and I thought ‘this song has it all’, what happens is that I had to change certain things. It has been a difficult production process because it has been against the clock and with a pressure to have rhythm & mldr; At the end I said “I don’t care if it’s not Eurovision”. I was sick of being told it wasn’t a Eurovision song. I wanted to make a song that I liked. If it was Eurovision, perfect, if not, then too. In the end, a song has come out that has a rhythm, which I feel is mine and I like.

What are the main strengths of ‘Ay, mama’?

For me, in the chorus, that rhythm that stops is very funny. When we found him in the studio, we were very impressed. It’s a song that costs me because, like all my songs, they come from within me and they move me. That’s a good thermometer for me. When I cry composing it, I see that there is something. With ‘Ay, mama’ it happens to me, and that is the final test to move forward.

Did you write it for your mother?

Yes. It’s like a zoom. Somehow, I start with my mother and it goes to all the women in the world. If this were a movie, it would start with a shot of my mother. Also, ‘Ay, mama’ I like as a tribute to all the women in my family.

As for the scenography, how are you preparing the performance of ‘Ay, mama’ that you will do on the stage of the ‘Benidorm Fest’?

I want to look for glamorous animality. I want to find that part of the female core and that at the same time be as powerful. I’m working a lot with my whole team looking for images and videos that inspire me, and also Eurovision references from other years, but I don’t look much either because I also prefer to create. What motivates me the most about all this is that if we go to Eurovision there he has all the means. It’s like a dream. You can ask for a bird to drop and whistle and pass.

Then there is the subject of showing the boobs, which I think you can’t, right? That’s why I make this song, so that one day it can be done. I don’t think it’s necessary, but I want the iconography of a tit to be, but I’m still looking for a way, but I really feel like it. I want him to be there for the ‘Benidorm Fest’ because the proposal goes with everything, it is like the final tie. Obviously, even if that is multiplied by 10 in Eurovision, I want to present what would be cool to me.

At Eurovision there have been many male singers who have gone shirtless and there has been no problem. If they let you, would you go like this?

If they let me, yes. Not in the whole song, but at one point I would love to.

Will you try to do it?

Yes. Actually, I’m seeing it because there are still more original ways to do it. First, I am seeing if that possibility is possible. If it’s possible then I’ll say yes or no. What happens is that now I don’t know if I can.

How have you received the reception that Eurofans and non-Eurofans have given to ‘Ay, Mama’ after the launch?

The truth is that very well. There are people who like the song and who don’t, but there are many more who like it. I have received a lot of affection. I did not know Eurofan and it is a very grateful audience, very excited and motivated by life because I am too. It is being intense. I hardly open Twitter, but now I have to be attentive to everything because there are many things, very strong, but cool.

Many eurofans give you the title of favorite. Do you have the pressure to win for that reason?

No, on the contrary. It motivates me in a cool way. Hopefully win, but I don’t feel pressured. I feel supported.

Your music career is meteoric. How does Eurovision fit into it right now?

I have wedged it in a bit with a shoehorn. If I go to Eurovision, the following weekend, I have two festivals. I can wake up now because I can’t rest on my laurels, since the summer tour will just begin. I fit it there as one more project to which I am giving a lot of affection and love, but I also have to see it with perspective. I’m giving it a lot of importance, but I’m not freaking out either because I have a lot of bowling and many other things that I also have to measure up to. Eurovision is one more thing, but my career is many songs and experiences.

I imagine your family is devoted to you, right?

They are already looking for a house in Turin. I said to them: “Let’s see, freaks out. Let me win the ‘Benidorm Fest’ and then we’ll look at the floor there.”
