Result Manchester United vs. Chelsea: Cristiano Ronaldo scores in equalizer but Red Devils top-four hopes fade

If Manchester United were still trying to make a run at finishing in the top four, they sure didn’t show it during the 1-1 draw against Chelsea. The Red Devils are now five points out of fourth place with just three games to play, and will need a miracle at this point to secure a Champions League spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equalizer for United two minutes after Marcos Alonso put the visitors ahead with a wide volley in the area. Ronaldo pounced on a lovely pass from Nemanja Matic into the box and sent a searing rocket into the roof of the net for his 17th Premier League goal.

The point allows Chelsea to maintain a stranglehold on third place in the Premier League standings, six points clear of the nearest challenger. The Blues’ focus now is on preparing for the FA Cup final on 14 May against Liverpool, and an injury substitution of N’Golo Kante will be something to monitor.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel will not be happy that his team failed to convert on a multitude of chances created, especially in the first half. Striker Kai Havertz, who has often been Chelsea’s best attacking player in various games this season, is one of the players who could have done more with his chances. But Havertz and compatriot Timo Werner often found Man United goalkeeper David De Gea up to the task.

Manchester United are in a period of transition as Dutchman Erik ten Hag prepares to replace interim German manager Ralf Rangnick. They will end the streak with three games remaining and hope to at least secure a place in next season’s Europa League by finishing fifth or sixth in the Premier League.

There will be a lot of work for Ten Hag and the club to repair the relationship with the supporters, who protested the club’s ownership before the match by entering the stadium well after kick-off and displaying a banner reading “Glazers Out”. The atmosphere at Old Trafford was tenuous, and with only one final home game remaining (May 2 against Brentford), many at the club will be itching to turn the page on a new season.

Live updates from Manchester United vs. Chelsea highlights from the Premier League

Final: Manchester United 1, Chelsea 1

minute 92: SUB Alejandro Garnacho makes his Manchester United debut.

90 minute: Three minute discount. Man United are trying to bring in Garnacho. This looks like it’s destined to end 1-1.

minute 82: SUB Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante appears to have taken a hit and Thomas Tuchel is taking no chances. It’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek taking his place.

80th minute: Reece James hits the post! He has been involved the entire game. In this case, a beautiful heel strike from Mason Mount sets the ball up perfectly for James to run to it and finish with a left foot from the far post.

minute 79: SUBS Man United’s Juan Mata for Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones for Nemanja Matic.

minute 78: Ronaldo again with a shot that puts Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to the test. But he was out the whole way (the flag was raised after the play was over).

minute 71: SUBS Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku by Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. Tuchel has stopped being patient for those two to find out.

minute 69: It’s hard to believe it was Ronaldo’s first Premier League goal against Chelsea.

minute 62: Cristiano Ronaldo equalizes! What a lofted ball from Nemanja Matic into Ronaldo’s trajectory, which sticks him into the roof of the net. 1-1.

minute 53: Timo Werner almost got to a Mason Mount cross at the far post. Chelsea threatening again. Same script as the first half.

minute 46: Back on track.

Half-time: Manchester United 0, Chelsea 0

Halftime: Another low point for Manchester United this season. The team is not playing well and the atmosphere at Old Trafford is subdued with fans showing up late for the game in protest. It looks like it’s only a matter of time before Chelsea breaks through. And once they do, it could be another lopsided loss.

No cohesion between the Man United players, and no aggression. David De Gea is the Red Devils’ best player. Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel will be frustrated that his team is not up front. Kai Havertz definitely had the look of him.

Minute 42: The Man United players surely don’t seem to want to impress new boss Erik ten Hag by watching from home. It’s hard to come to a different conclusion than Gary Neville below:

minute 36: Havertz heads in from close range. It seems so easy for Chelsea. De Gea has to invent another save. Man United has disappeared again.

Minute 28: Another shot at Havertz! N’Golo Kante puts it on goal, but Havertz’s shot goes wide of De Gea. Chelsea is easily passing through Man United’s resistance. Frankly, there isn’t much resistance until they get to De Gea.

Check out the highlights on USA.

minute 26: Ronaldo, surrounded by three Chelsea defenders in the box, is dispossessed and is a transition for Chelsea. Kai Havertz hits the side net.

minute 19: Man United have just let Chelsea into the box. Jorginho doesn’t bother and gives N’Golo Kante a plate, who shoots on goal. It is not a difficult save for De Gea. Too easy for Chelsea.

minute 13: Ronaldo tries the Chilean! He is away, and Cristiano is not happy with the execution of him. Man United are spending a bit more time in the Chelsea half.

minute 10: First threat posed by Man United. Alex Telles with the cross, but a header from Bruno Fernandes does not worry Edouard Mendy. However, Chelsea looks more comfortable and its space and shape are excellent.

Minute 6: Two shots from Timo Werner in the space of a few minutes. Man United goalkeeper David De Gea with the easy save in the second. Red Devils got off to another slow start.

1st minute: We’re off, still plenty of empty seats at Old Trafford.

15 minutes from K/O: The pressure on the Glazers is relentless. Erik ten Hag really needs to deliver in a big way for them.

45 minutes from K/O: We have a couple of young players who have made their way onto the Man United bench:
