The return to the office carries with it an increase in conflicts or aggressiveness at work, further affecting the mental health of Quebecers and Canadians, according to a recent study unveiled Thursday.

The Mental Health Index from wellness solutions provider LifeWorks reveals that 20% of Canadians who have experienced this aggression at work see their mental health decline with a score 10 points lower than the national average.

Quebec’s mental health score rose slightly to 66.3 points in May, while the result for Canadians was 64.9 points out of 100, almost the same as the result recorded in April with 64.8 points.

Women are 40% more likely than men to have experienced an increase in conflict or aggression when speaking to the public or customers, a figure that rises to 60% among managers.

The report finds that 34% of respondents say their organization does not provide training, coaching or support to help them deal with conflict or aggression at work.

“We are seeing elevated stress levels in the workplace as tension mounts in the wake of new hybrid operating models,” Stephen Liptrap, president and CEO, said in a statement.

“In order to mitigate risk and ensure that employees feel supported and safe, it is essential to provide ongoing training and personalized resources,” recommended Mr. Liptrap.
