Regina police say one of their vehicles was hit while trying to stop a driver behind the wheel of a stolen car.

Police say the incident occurred Wednesday as a Canine Unit agent was heading north on Broad Street near 15th Avenue. The sheriff saw a vehicle coming from the opposite direction at what was described as “extremely high speed.”

The officer turned to follow the vehicle and ran the license plate number. The red Hyundai Elantra was reported stolen.

The vehicle slowed and turned west into a dead-end lane in the 2400 block of Broad Street.

The police vehicles then entered the lane and made room for the suspect vehicle to exit.

A statement from the police force said that when officers tried to tell the driver to stop and get out of the vehicle, he initiated “a series of erratic driving maneuvers” and nearly hit a nearby officer.

Police allege that the driver eventually hit one of the police vehicles.

“It was an example of how unpredictable and dangerous police surveillance can be,” the statement read.

The statement said officers were able to immobilize the stolen vehicle and remove the suspect from the car.

Officers charged the driver, a 16-year-old boy, with two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer with a weapon (the vehicle), one count of dangerous driving, possession of property obtained for a crime of more than $ 5,000. , resisting a law enforcement officer, operating a mode of transportation while prohibited from doing so, violating a release order, and failing to comply with a provision.

The child cannot be named in accordance with the provisions of the Juvenile Criminal Justice Act.

He made his first appearance in juvenile court on Wednesday afternoon.
