Regina councilor stands pushing school, playground zone starts times back – Regina | The Canadian News

Regina City Councilor Jason Mancinelli is seeking a review of the daily time constraints that govern school and playground zones.

Currently the 30 km / h zones come into operation at 07:00 and end at 19:00, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Ward 9 councilor Mancinelli would like to see those hours changed to 08:00 to 20:00

“07:00 in the morning, or 7:30 in the morning, traffic is back. “It creates unnecessary stress on the roads for people on the way to work,” Mancinelli said on Sunday.

“I do not like to come to work just like a watch and I do not think anyone else has to do it. I think it can take away a bit of that tension, make things move a little smoother along the way and start your day with a brighter smile. ”

Mancinelli has written a motion proposing changes, which will be submitted to city council this Wednesday for discussion.

Mancinelli says he would like to see the changes applied to Regina playground zones as well as school zones.

The zone hours and speed limits were introduced by the council in 2019.

The debates were then dominated by speed limit consideration, rather than timing, he said.

“We were really caught up in the meeting to argue about the speed limits and whether they were effective or not,” he said, adding he thinks the current time frame is an easy approval given by the council because it is common in other parts of Canada is.

“Day-to-day it is a big problem. Many people start work at 08:00. A start time at 07:00 means that you go through a school zone in which you never see a child. children still play in playgrounds and school zones. ”

Of course, such a change would not come without a cost.

Signage changes for the 2019 change, according to city documents, are estimated at about $ 180,000, although that also includes the change of speed limit signs.

Saskatoon City Council votes for 12-hour school zone

Global News reached out to the Regina Police Service for information on the number of pedestrian-involved collisions in school zones before 8 a.m. since the hours were changed. We will update this story when an answer is received.

Meanwhile, when asked about any possible safety issues, Mancinelli said most of the discussion was focused on school with day care.

“It is generally not pedestrian traffic, it is vehicle traffic. Those people also need to get to work. ”

Mancinelli added he would also like the city to consider changing time signs on the signs from the 24-hour to a 12-hour format, as well as exploring the idea of ”vertical infrastructure signs” such as colored light poles.

In November, Saskatoon City Council voted 6-5 to extend their 30 km / h school zones from 08:00 to 17:00 to 07:00 to 19:00 and to have those hours in force all year round.

The change in Saskatoon is scheduled to be implemented this year.
