Reader’s Letter: School playgrounds should not be fenced

The playgrounds in many of our schools have been fenced off and locked without access after school hours, on weekends, or during the summer.

I believe that this policy seems to contradict our goal of enhancing the entire development of the child. Play is an essential component of learning, yet that opportunity is denied.

I know there is always a concern about vandalism and liability issues. But in our quest to protect school property, I believe this policy has exceeded the freedom and necessity for the growth of our children.
