Re: Reader’s Letter: New Hospital Must Be Downtown, by Arleen Deschamps, Nov 6

As a former city manager and city councilor, I would like to point out the following facts in response to Ms. Deschamps’ letter advocating a downtown location for the new hospital.

A downtown location would be a much longer distance for county residents to travel. The proposed location is still in the city, but closer to the county which, like the city, is contributing approximately $ 100 million to the cost of the hospital.

The location is also in the next major area to be developed residentially in Windsor where the developers, not the taxpayer, will primarily pay for the services (roads and sewer) that will be needed. The area already has a main sanitary sewer that leads to the Little River Treatment Plant.

The hospital location will be easily accessible by a bus route along County Road 42 to provide transportation for city residents.

In my opinion, it is fortunate that the provincial government is proceeding with the hospital project and, as illustrated by Prime Minister Doug Ford, recently secured payment of $ 9.8 million that will allow project planning and design to continue.
