“Everyone in rural Saskatchewan will understand how important these elements are to a community center, like a local city hall.”

Larry Lundquist serves as the reeve for the rural township of Eldon and said the hall is used for events such as wedding receptions, family reunions and fundraisers.

The lounge is over 100 years old and has a portable outdoor toilet, making it a good resting place for people on the go.

It is located about 25 miles north of Maidstone on Highway 21.

Lundquist said the room is isolated, so people check it from time to time to make sure there are no problems.

Someone recently checked the hallway and realized they had been mugged.

Lundquist told Global News that this is the second time he has infiltrated. Last time, they found a man living in the hallway.

“They stole 50 sets of glass salt and pepper shakers, but they did not take a box of salt and a box of pepper. They stole our plastic cutlery, but they didn’t steal the metal cutlery that was there, ”Lundquist told Global News.

Lundquist said the tablecloths that were stolen were made by the drama club.

The most expensive item missing is the bow and arrow set, which costs $ 700.

“It’s almost like someone wants to set up a commercial kitchen or set up a couple of houses,” Lundquist said of the items they took away.

“Absolutely without rhyme or reason. Usually (people) steal things that are sensible, for which they can get cash, but this doesn’t seem like what they were doing here. “

Lundquist said the theft has upset the community.

“They not only robbed an individual, they robbed the entire community,” he added.

Lundquist, who is also on the community room board, said he lost money during the pandemic when large events were restricted. With the restrictions that ended in July, the hall was able to begin hosting events again.

The community has insurance, but Lundquist said it will still be expensive to pay for it.

“The insurance has a deductible of $ 1,000, which could well be $ 10,000 for a community room like ours.”

Lundquist explained that community members would go out of their way to help anyone in need, so they would rather have people ask for help rather than rob the community.

There will be a board meeting to discuss the future of the room, but Lundquist said no one wants to cease operations and the board has no plans to do so.

Larry Lundquist serves as Reeve for the rural township of Eldon and said the hall is used for events such as wedding receptions, family reunions and fundraisers.
