Querétaro seeks to participate in a semiconductor supply chain

Querétaro, Qro. Through the technological development capacities of the state, it seeks to participate in the supply chain of the industry of semiconductors.

The Secretary of Sustainable Development (Sedesu), Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero, confirmed that the way in which the productive base of the state could be anchored to the supply chain of semiconductor production is being analyzed.

“We are working on that; in the first place, touching the players in the industry, those who manufacture semiconductors, and from there we become suppliers ”, he explained.

According to the state secretary, this step might not involve the installation of a semiconductor plant in the state, due to the implications of installing a production center of this type, particularly due to the high demand for water supply.

“Maybe not the plant, because installing a semiconductor plant requires a lot of water, constant and pure water, a situation that the state has its complications; but in the state there is a lot of technology that can develop many products that supply these semiconductor plants We are working on that ”, he declared.

The foregoing, given the semiconductor deficit that occurs globally, greatly impacting the automotive industry. The chip shortage it influences the assembly companies to go into unemployment and impact the supply chain of the automotive industry.

Ante al technical strike initiated by the Audi assembly plant in Puebla and the impact it generates on the Querétaro auto parts industry, the head of Sedesu explained that this strike only affects a proportion of the state’s auto parts companies, particularly those that supply the German firm.

“And Audi stopped production surely some companies, not all, (not all auto parts manufacturers in the state sell to Audi and Audi is not the only company that produces vehicles) some companies saw their vehicles delayed, their shipments, purchase orders canceled, but they are not all . It is something that happens in business, especially in the automotive industry, surely some companies were affected, but it is not the generality “, he declared.

Meanwhile, added the head of Sedesu, the manufacturing and transportation equipment industry – which includes the automotive industry – has shown a better performance during 2021, compared to the fall it had in 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic and the detention in the centers of production, it would also have improved compared to the pre-pandemic level.

In this context, the president of the Querétaro Automotive Cluster, Renato Villaseñor Mendoza, confirmed that the technical stoppage of Audi It affects some auto parts companies in the state in an escalation, since 25% (75 out of 300 firms approximately) provide Audi already Volkswagen.

According to the president of the cluster, these are technical stoppages at the local level that are agreed upon with the unions to avoid affecting the workers’ working conditions.
