Quebec Presents Free Legal Consultation for Survivors of Sexual and Domestic Violence – Montreal | The Canadian News

Quebecers who are survivors of sexual and domestic violence will be able to receive up to four hours of free legal advice, the province’s justice minister said on Monday.

Simon Jolin-Barrette released the latest measure to the tune of $ 3 million as part of a larger plan to better support victims in the province and expand access to the justice system. The team will include 14 members, including 12 attorneys who specialize in various fields.

The free consultation will be available to anyone who has experienced sexual or domestic violence, regardless of income, beginning in October.

“It is not necessary to have made an accusation or to have gone to see the police,” Jolin-Barrette said. “All clients will be covered.”

Quebec will establish a specialized court for victims of sexual and domestic violence

When someone calls the service, they can receive advice on what to do, how the legal system works, and what to expect if you make an official report to the police. The hotline (1-833-REBATIR) will also refer victims to other resources, such as financial assistance or shelters, when needed.

Under the plan, some people may qualify for free legal representation in court.

While Jolin-Barrette said she acknowledges there is a lack of trust in the judicial system, she hopes this initiative will help combat that sentiment.

“My job is to make sure that every person who is a victim of sexual assault or domestic violence trusts the justice system,” he said.

The Quebec government is also strengthening its partnership with the Juripop legal clinic for the next three years until 2024.

Juripop will represent 125 people free of charge annually. The organization will also collect information on the obstacles victims face during their judicial process and provide the province with solutions on how to address those problems.
