Publisher | Necessary plan, fragile majority

That the response plan to the invasion of Ukraine has been approved by the Congress of Deputies is positive news. With an endowment of 16,000 million and with its 23 measures, the plan tries to respond to the needs of many social sectors affected by the effects of Putin’s war on the Spanish economy. Consequently, it was to be expected that a measure of this nature would have broad support, no matter how much it is not to the full liking of all the forces policies. However, this has not been the case, and it is unfortunate that the plan has been up in the air and has been approved by only four votes difference. Moreover, as happened with the last labor reform, Pedro Sánchez has not been able to convince all the parties either who supported him in the investiture session, in such a way that the vote has once again highlighted the fragility of the current government majority.

The immediate cause of this situation is known: CKD irritation Therefore, the Republicans consider a lack of response from the Executive (or an inadequate response, in the case of the Defense Minister) in the face of the alleged espionage suffered by dozens of independentistas. The reasons given are important for the formation of Oriol Junqueras, but in no case justify voting against a proposal that supposes substantial aid for the citizens, some of which requested by the republicans. Especially when the responsibilities for espionage are not yet substantiated and when Esquerra and other pro-independence parties have been included in the Official Secrets Commission that You need to provide more information about it. As happened with the approval of the labor reform, the decision of the republicans constitutes rather a gesticulation aimed at not losing prominence before the other Catalan pro-independence forces that an effective political pressure measure, once the Government had assured the majority by the favorable vote of Bildu. But it could have had more serious consequences for the Spanish, as the parties that voted in favor recalled, setting aside their misgivings about Sánchez’s attitude.

The two big games they also have their share of responsibility for the tense vote that the Congress of Deputies heard again. As the main government party, the PSOE should be more involved in overcoming ideological divisions when it comes to deal with issues of state or of great social scope. It is not an easy task, because two do not dance if one does not want to, but the change of direction in the PP was an opportunity to have tried even more tenaciously.

It is likely that Alberto Núnez-Feijóo has not been up to the task either, wasting the opportunity to show that the changes in the leadership of his party will allow him to combine an opposition task with a State responsibility. Everything indicates that he is still more concerned about Vox’s criticism than maintaining an attitude more in line with that of their European counterparts. There are ample indications to think that the war in Ukraine is going to last a long time and that its consequences on our standard of living will last for a long time. Faced with this scenario, to which other factors of uncertainty must be added, responsibility and stability are values that all parties should share, beyond his legitimate aspiration to win the next elections. These are not times for division and fragility, and those who promote it must account for it before their constituents.
