Public centers will receive 384 euros per vulnerable student in P3 and 1st of ESO

  • 86% of public schools and 37% of concerted schools will have less than 20 children per classroom in P3

  • Next year there will be 3,474 fewer students in P3 and 2,073 fewer in secondary

The next school year 2022-23 in Cataloniain addition to the new curricula in primary, ESO and high school, will be the beginning of the ratio reduction –favored by the demographic decline– and the implementation of measures to combat school segregation. In relation to this point, and in application of the admissions decree, public centers will receive for the first time 384.66 euros for each vulnerable student who have schooled in P3 and in 1st year of ESO. Until now, public schools did not receive any contribution for this concept, while concerted schools received 600 euros – which from next year will be 988.1 euros – per student from the third in a vulnerable situation.

These funds will serve to cover all needs of these students beyond schooling; that is, the colonies, excursions or additional activities. It is one of the novelties that the Minister of Education, Josep González-Cambrayannounced this Thursday at the presentation of the compulsory education offer for the next course.

These contributions will be maintained progressively in such a way as to guarantee the equal opportunities of the students. Educació puts the amount that it will allocate next year to this measure at 10 million euros. A figure calculated based on the number of students currently identified as having special educational needs. Cambray has underlined that an effort is being made to detect all these children and that places will be reserved according to each area, both in the public and in the concerted one.

Furthermore, for the first time, the reservation of places for students with specific educational needs (SEN) until the start of the new course, and not until the day before the publication of the lists of those admitted as was done until now.

Another important novelty is the reduction of ratios in Infant 3 (P3) both in public and private schools. The groups will be of maximum of 20 students in 86% of public centers. The percentage is lower in the concerted, where the reduction of ratios is voluntary: 37%. Cambray has pointed out that the concerted centers that have not joined has been due to lack of spaces. In the system as a whole, 99% of groups of public centers and 73% of concerted schools will reduce ratios below 25 students per classroom.

fewer students

The idea of Educació is that this ratio reduction be progressively applied to the rest of the primary and secondary levels and that within 9 years it will be in force throughout the system. Trust the help of demographics, with the birth rate down. A phenomenon that, once again, is reflected in the figures for new students: next year there will be 57,871 students in P3, 3,474 fewer than those enrolled in this year. Cambray has pointed out that despite this decrease, there is an increase of 25 groups in the global calculation of the service, since there will be 58 more in the public one and 33 less in the concerted one. This will translate into 2,110 public P3 groups and 978 arranged.

In 1st ESO, the number of students falls for the second consecutive year: there will be 81,503 students, 2,073 less than this year. There will also be fewer groups, since the public loses 8 (2,021 in total) and the concerted 18 (973).

new centers

On the other hand, three schools are created as a result of the merger of centres: Escola Balàfia-Pinyana (Lleida), Escola La Vila (Polinyà) and Escola Castellfollit del Boix. And there will be four new school institutes: El Molí (Barcelona), Arrabassada (Tarragona), Torrelles (Torrelles de Llobregat) and Miquel Martí i Pol (Lliçà d’Amunt). In addition, 17 centers will have a new building. One center, the Escola Projecte, will be integrated into the public network. Cambray does not rule out that there may be some more integration.
