Province Amends Sexual Violence Reporting Protocols at Ontario Colleges and Universities | The Canadian News

The Ontario government has released revised guidelines for postsecondary institutions regarding how schools handle investigations related to reported sexual assaults.

Provincial officials said one change is that a person who reports sexual violence will not be subject to the institution’s rules related to drug and alcohol use at the time the incident occurred.

Another change requires that students who experience sexual violence not be asked “irrelevant questions” from school personnel or researchers regarding sexual history or sexual expressions.

The province said these sexual violence policies must be amended by March 31, 2022.

“Our number one priority is student safety: Everyone should be able to continue their studies on or off campus without worrying about sexual violence or harassment,” said Minister of Colleges and Universities Jill Dunlop.

“This is why our government is working with postsecondary institutions to update their sexual violence and harassment policies to better support students who have already been through a difficult experience and may feel scared and vulnerable,” Dunlop said.
