Projet Montréal wishes to focus on mixed teams

As the shootings take place in the metropolis, the head of Projet Montréal, Valerie Plante, proposes a plan of 110 million dollars over four years in terms of public security, in addition to the annual budget of the SPVM, if she is re-elected. At the heart of its strategy: the funding of mixed teams that will unite police and citizens to tackle this major issue.

Gun violence is more visible across the province, particularly in eastern Montreal. The number of attempted murders committed with a firearm has indeed quadrupled in the metropolis in 2020 compared to 2016. A new shooting also occurred on Saturday morning in the Sud-Ouest borough, an event that Ms. Plante called it “unacceptable” at a conference held in the early afternoon in downtown Montreal.

Just over a month before the November 7 election, Valérie Plante presented her colors in terms of public safety. Thus, while maintaining the budget of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), which is increasing annually, the candidate for re-election is proposing a complementary plan of 110 million for various projects aimed at “ensuring the safety” of the city. Montreal population.

Of this envelope, a sum of 15 million should allow the deployment of the Mobile Mediation and Social Intervention Team (ÉMMIS), which is currently the subject of a pilot project in Ville-Marie, in all the boroughs of the metropolis. This team, made up entirely of social workers, works mainly with vulnerable people in crisis situations, opting for a de-escalation approach. An emergency fund of $ 15 million will aim to meet the “urgent needs” of the SPVM, while supporting its various mixed teams.

The plan does not detail how Projet Montréal intends, in concrete terms, to distribute the remaining $ 80 million, if it is elected next November. It does not, moreover, mention the funding of community groups in the area of crime prevention. The head of Projet Montréal, however, announced at the beginning of the month that the budget of the Diversity and Social Inclusion Department for various programs aimed at preventing violence among young people and urban safety will be increased to reach 5 million. dollars, in 2022.

Ms. Plante also once again urged the re-elected government to Justin trudeau legislate to ban handguns across the country, instead of offloading this task to cities.
