Gary McCourt, of New Annan, PEI, won the $8.6 million Atlantic Lottery Lotto 6/49 jackpot seven years after winning $150,000 playing Lotto 6/49.

Atlantic Lottery said in a news release that McCourt was in the midst of Easter dinner with his family on April 17 when he found out that someone from PEI had won more than $8 million.

McCourt checked his email with his wife, Joy, and saw he had won, but it didn’t say how much.

“I told Joy to give me the number so I could call in to the Atlantic Lottery right away,” Gary said. “I had to call back half an hour later to see what she had said the first time because I couldn’t hear a word she was saying over my wife and mother-in-law standing beside me screeching.”

McCourt said it was hard enough convincing his wife about his first win, because he often pulls pranks.

“He tells a lot of stories,” Joy said. “It took a long time for it to really sink in, both times he won.”

McCourt Told to CBC they will buy a one-floor home in PEI that will help with Gary’s accessibility with his wheelchair.

McCourt plans to keep playing the lottery.
