Vic Cangialosi’s Preakness Picks

New York Post Racing Predictor

1. Secret oath:

Well, at least we have a chance to pick a winner this time. There is no “also eligible” in the second jewel, but there is a filly and she has a devastating late kick. He has won four of his last five, losing in the Arkansas Derby. She’s ready to take on the guys again after she made it all look easy at the Kentucky Oaks. She gets a rhythm to chase. She gets up.

2. Early Voting

The cool horse. He hasn’t raced since Wood Memorial when he was passed on a long straight. Chad Brown opted to pass up the Derby, which may turn out to be a wise decision. The tight corners at Pimlico, as well as the shorter distance, make it difficult to catch him.

3. Epicenter

Hard hit in the Derby. He won the duel with his rival Zandon but Joel Rosario did not see Rich Strike in the rear view mirror. Worthy favorite again, but battle fatigue can take its toll. Never worse than second in four starts this year. We’re putting him third.

1. Secret oath

The D. Wayne Lukas filly had to endure a brutal ride against the boys in the Arkansas Derby and still found a way to finish an impressive third. He followed that up with a win at the Kentucky Oaks. The third betting option based on the morning line odds, Secret Oath, is worth playing to piss off Epicenter.

2. Epicenter

We could see Epicenter as a favorite by the time the horses arrive at the gate on Saturday and for good reason. Epicenter was able to hold off Zandon in the Kentucky Derby, but Rich Strike attacked him at the last moment. Had he won the Derby, these odds would be even lower. This field is not very deep and Epicenter is the class of the group.

3. Skippy Longstocking

A long shot for a reason, Skippylongstocking has shown improvement in each of his starts, culminating in a third-place finish at the Wood Memorial against Mo Donegal and Early Voting. In that race, Skippy Longstocking was able to overtake several tired horses to hit the board. If the pace gets too intense, too fast, Skippylongstocking could pick up the pieces and potentially add a nice price to the exacts or trifectas.

Thomas Casale’s Preakness Picks

Action Network Senior Editor

1. Early Voting

I like to go fast in Preakness and Early Voting has a lot of it. He led all the way into the Wood Memorial until Mo Donegal bit him on the wire. Mo Donegal would have been my pick if he was running in the Preakness. Since he’s not, I’ll go with a well-rested Early Voting to edge out the favorite Epicenter.

2. Epicenter

If it weren’t for Rich Strike’s shocking victory in the Kentucky Derby, everyone would be talking about Epicenter going for the Triple Crown. He showed the speed of him holding off a game from Zandon down the stretch of the Derby before Rich Strike ran him over. I’d be surprised if Epicenter doesn’t end up in the money on Saturday.

3. Secret oath

D. Wayne Lukas’s horse is trying to become the second filly in three years to win the Preakness. He bounced back from a slump in the Arkansas Derby to beat a big field in the Kentucky Oaks in an impressive time of 1:49.44. Secret Oath has finished in the top 3 in seven of his eight career starts. My favorite horse to include in the Preakness exotic stakes.
