Pre-COVID freedom is not for tomorrow

The vaccine passport will be gradually withdrawn. Some rejoice, others are sorry. One thing is certain, Legault had no other choice. How could he have justified maintaining the passport in the current health context and while four provinces and a legion of countries are abandoning it?

Law

Despite everything, let’s not imagine a return to pre-COVID freedom. Quebec clarified that the passport is simply suspended, and not definitively abolished. It could be reactivated at any time, depending on the mood of Power.

Moreover, the Prime Minister recently announced that he will table a bill in March which will confer on the State certain powers hitherto considered extremely rare and exclusive to emergency situations, such as the use of the vaccine passport.

Thus, betting on the emollient effect of the announced relaxations, François Legault hopes to pass a law which grants more powers to the State by trivializing the exceptional, by legalizing the leash with which it has held Quebecers for two years.

Democracy

Since Quebec is a society governed by the rule of law, our freedoms are protected by law. However, making the principle of a passport legal in ordinary times is to pave the way for a system of permissions and privileges where our fundamental freedoms, and therefore our intimate, social and professional lives, could become dependent on our compliance with dictates of rulers.

The passport turned out to be more of a punitive measure than a sanitary one. It is a tool of marginalization, intimidation and freedom blackmail which infantilizes citizens. To entrench one’s recourse in a law is to institutionalize governance through threat and fear.

Let’s not be care bears. The proposed law constitutes a shift towards a democracy in appearance, a democracy based on social credit. If it passes, a filthy world could emerge.

Sleeping on gas is comfortable. But here you have to wake up. There are powers that no state should ever get, for whatever reason!
