Port of Montreal | Ukrainian captain receives 2024 Gold-headed Cane

Captain Eduard Voshchuk, at the helm of the ship Helena G, received the Golden-headed Cane in Montreal on Tuesday. This ocean-going vessel was the first in 2024 to cross – without any other stopover – the water limit of the Port of Montreal.

THE Helena G left the port of Burgas, Bulgaria, on December 12. The ship, flying the Portuguese flag, was carrying gold and pyrite. It docked at Pier 43 of the Port of Montreal, operated by Logistec.

Captain Voshchuk, of Ukrainian origin, started sailing at the age of 18. Coming from a family of sailors, he followed the tradition, his father, his grandfather and his uncles all being captains, indicated the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) in a press release on Tuesday. He received the gold-headed cane engraved with his name from Geneviève Deschamps, interim president and CEO of the APM, during a ceremony.

The Gold-Headed Cane is given to the captain of the first ocean-going ship to reach the port of Montreal non-stop at the start of the new year, a tradition that dates back 185 years, according to the APM.
