Police Search for Two Suspects and SUV Allegedly Involved in East York ATM Explosion

Toronto police have released images of two men and a van they believe were involved in the attempted robbery of an ATM in East York over the weekend.

The incident occurred Sunday around 4:45 a.m. at a TD Canada Trust branch at 801 O’Connor Drive, near St. Clair Avenue East.

According to police, a gray SUV approached the financial institution and an explosive device was allegedly placed against an outdoor ATM.

Two men then exited the vehicle and allegedly waited around the corner while the van parked nearby.

Police said the device detonated about 10 minutes later, damaging the ATM, which is a self-service model and is separate from the main building.

They said the two men ran to the ATM “only to discover that the cash drawer had not been breached.”

In surveillance video obtained by CTV News, two men are seen casually walking away from the ATM area moments before the explosion. They pull into a driveway on O’Connor Drive. A man then heads to another door and appears to enter quickly just before a cloud of dust or debris is seen in the upper left corner, where the ATM is located. Seconds later, they are both seen running towards the ATM.

No injuries were reported.

Toronto Police K9 and bomb disposal units were dispatched to the scene Sunday afternoon. The Toronto Fire Service also deployed its hazardous materials and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives units to assist police with their investigation.

On Monday, forensic services remained at the scene and police officers could be seen carrying out systematic searches on the roofs of both the bank and neighboring businesses.

Several people who live nearby told CTV News Toronto that the explosion woke them up around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

“I heard the explosion, like a bomb or something. “I woke up right away,” said an area resident named John.

“I went out to check. “I thought it was the boiler room.”

Area resident Justin Van Dette of the O’Connor Bermondsey Business Association called the incident “very, very scary for the community.”

“A loud explosion was heard blocks from this site. It’s terrifying,” she said.
