Police shot and killed a cougar said to be loitering in a Lethbridge, Alta. Subdivision on Saturday.

Local police say the animal, which was about two meters long, posed a threat to public safety.

They say a witness saw the cougar jump a six-foot fence from an alley into someone’s backyard.

Police say dispatchers tried to call Alberta Fish and Wildlife, but there was no response, so they notified local residents of the situation and officers went inside.

They claim that the officers “faced an aggressive posture cougar only a few meters away” and had no choice but to kill him because he posed a significant threat.
