Police investigate alleged bomb threat at Waterloo region airport

KITCHEN –

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is investigating a bomb threat at the Waterloo Region International Airport.

In a press release, police said they “responded to a report of a bomb on a plane” around 2 pm Monday and “a passenger informed staff that another passenger threatened to have a bomb on the plane.”

Police said a man was detained.

Members of the Explosives Disposal Unit were called in to determine if there was a bomb on board.

Police said the Breslau airport was closed on Monday afternoon.

The airport tweeted that “delays in arrival and departure times should be expected” and asked travelers to check with the airline about the status of their flight.

Around 6 p.m., officers at the scene told passengers that all flights were canceled for the night.

Flair Airlines released a statement on social media saying they were addressing a “safety issue that required a full search of the aircraft on flight F8 500.” That plane, they explained, was scheduled to depart the Waterloo region at 2:10 p.m. for Vancouver International Airport.

The airline added that all the passengers were disembarked as a precaution.Passengers waiting outside the Waterloo Region International Airport after an alleged bomb threat. (December 13, 2021)

Police said there would be an increased emergency services presence at the airport on Monday and asked the public to avoid the area.

CTV News spoke with a man who was supposed to be on a flight from the Waterloo region to Edmonton.

Harpreet Singh said his plane was due to depart at 3:30 pm, but he and other passengers were told to stay off the property. At that point they told him that his plane would be delayed for two hours.

“It’s obviously frustrating for us,” he said. “We’ve been waiting. Before that we were concerned, and even when we called the airline they said, ‘We have no information about what’s going on.’

As some travelers returned home, Singh said he would wait outside the airport to receive updates on his flight.
