The OPP says that people in Prince Edward County should be wary of a new scam involving people claiming to be fire officials.

According to police, on September 2, someone posing as a fire inspector called a Picton company.

The alleged scammer asked the business owner for information and told them they would come to his location for an inspection.

Police say the scammer later told employees who worked at the establishment that they were violating fire codes and that they had to pay a significant fine.

This person then requested a partial payment of $ 15,000 via cryptocurrency, which the police say was transferred.

The OPP has yet to release any information on the identity of the suspect and says the investigation is continuing.
