Paul McCartney will make history as the oldest solo headliner at Glastonbury


Paul McCartney will become Glastonbury Festival’s longest-serving solo headliner a day after Billie Eilish became the youngest solo artist in history.

The former Beatle’s headlining show tonight will come exactly one week after he celebrated his 80th birthday and more than 60 years of making music.

Before his historic performance on the Pyramid Stage, McCartney gave a surprise preview performance at an intimate venue in Frome, Somerset, where he performed some of his best-known solo material.

Within the selection were hit songs Maybe I’m surprised Y band on the run along with some of the Beatles’ most beloved songs, including hello jude Y Blackbird.

In recent months, McCartney has been performing across the US for his Got Back tour, with Jon Bon Jovi joining for his show in New Jersey.

The singer has previously said his tour and Glastonbury performance will be packed with hits from his time in the Beatles and his later group Wings, as well as some of his most popular solo material.

His performance is expected to draw an especially large crowd and could rival those of The Rolling Stones in 2013 and Adele in 2016.

Day four of the Glastonbury festival could be a case of “Here Comes The Sun”, with revelers ready to enjoy a sunny day with scattered showers at Worthy Farm.

Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth told the PA news agency: “Today will be a windy day with sunny spells and some scattered showers.

“The rains can be heavy at times, but they should pass quickly, and it will feel relatively cool compared to the first few days of the festival.

“A maximum temperature of 20C today.”

The Stones will spend Saturday performing to tens of thousands of fans at the British Summer Time festival in London’s Hyde Park.

The Pyramid Stage will host a variety of pre-McCartney talent, including Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, HAIM, AJ Tracey, Easy Life, Joy Crookes and Les Amazones d’Afrique.

There will also be music stars on the festival’s multiple stages, with American pop star Olivia Rodrigo and rapper Megan Thee Stallion playing on the Other Stage.

While Mercury winner Celeste will play the West Holts Stage, The Hoosiers will headline the Avalon Stage and Jessie Ware will close out The Park Stage.

Billie Eilish delivered an electrifying headlining performance on the Pyramid Stage on Friday to end the first day of performances at Glastonbury.

Her appearance was a landmark moment for the festival as she became Glastonbury’s youngest solo headliner.

During her presentation, she spoke out against the US Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade case that legalized abortion across the country.

While presenting his song Your power Sitting next to her brother and co-writer, Finneas O’Connell, she said: “The song we’re about to do is, I think, one of the favorites we’ve ever written and it’s about the concept of power and how you have to always remember how not to Abuse her.

“And today is a very, very dark day for women in the United States. I’m just going to say that since I can’t bear to think about it anymore right now.”

Throughout the show, he treated the audience of adoring fans with a selection of hit songs from his two number one albums, including bury a friend, When the party’s over, NDA Y my strange addiction.

She gave a typically energetic performance, running and dancing across the stage, wearing a graphic black and white outfit with black striped arm warmers and her hair in space buns.

Near the end of her set, she admitted that she felt “so undeserving” of this opportunity and thanked the festival and fans for inviting her.

He added: “I am so honored to be here amongst all of you and all of the amazing artists and history of this festival.”

Ahead of her, Sam Fender took to the Pyramid Stage to play a selection of his popular tunes, including seventeen sinking, We will talk? Y spiceto a crowd of excited fans waving flags and chanting.

The Pyramid Stage also played host to a variety of talent on Friday, including Ziggy Marley, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Crowded House, Rufus Wainwright and Wolf Alice, who just made their performance after their flight from Los Angeles was cancelled.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke via video message describing Glastonbury as the “greatest concentration of freedom” and called on the world to “spread the truth” about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Eurovision winners Kalush Orchestra also marked their first UK performance since their victory, with a performance on Shangri-La’s Truth Stage on Friday’s bill.
