Partner Content | Bruins vs. Bruins Picks and Odds Maple Leafs: Boston takes advantage of Toronto’s resting stars

The Toronto Maple Leafs host the Boston Bruins at Scotiabank Arena on Friday in what will be the end of the regular season for both teams.

The pre-game narrative: Toronto’s standings won’t change based on this game, but the result could alter the course of the Eastern Conference playoffs. A win for the Bruins, plus a loss of any kind for the Tampa Bay Lightning, would send the Buds to Beantown for Round 1. An overtime loss for Boston and a regulation loss for the Bolts would also create a first-round matchup between Boston and Toronto. .

Bruins vs. Maple Leafs Picks

Best bet: Bruins money line (-125)

This game means nothing to the Maple Leafs’ spot in the standings and the team seems to be treating it as such.

Toronto will rest Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares in Friday’s competition. His absences from the lineup, combined with Boston’s recent hot streak, certainly give the Bruins the upper hand in this one.

The Bruins have won four straight and six of the last seven. They’ve earned wins against playoff squads like the Florida Panthers, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins along the way, recently welcoming Hampus Lindholm and David Pastrnak.

Boston’s top stars have been exactly that during this run. Patrice Bergeron scored a hat-trick on Thursday and has nine points in his last three games, while Brad Marchand and Pastrnak each have six points in their last three starts.

Boston’s two potential playoff opponents are the Carolina Hurricanes and the Maple Leafs, and it would be a surprise if the Bruins took this game lightly and opted for the Canes instead. Carolina swept the season series against Boston this year, winning all three games by a combined score of 16-1.

Key stat: The Bruins are 4-1 in their last five games against the Atlantic Division.

quick picks

Bruins vs Maple Leafs under 6.5 goals (-120): Boston has been an unders machine of late, falling below this total in 10 of its last 11 games. Meanwhile, Toronto has been below this total in six of the eight games Matthews has missed this season.

Maple Leafs under 2.5 goals (+130): The Bruins have been good at limiting their opponent’s offense in recent outings, allowing three goals or more in just two of their last seven games. It should also be difficult for Toronto to find offense on a night when their entire front line, plus Tavares, is out.
