Outdoor mask: where it is mandatory and exceptions

The outdoor masks They are back to stay. For how long? President Pedro Sánchez did not specify when the royal decree law that will be published in the Official State Gazette this Friday, December 24, will decline, but stressed that it will be “as soon as possible.” “It is only temporary,” insisted Minister Carolina Darias today. Therefore, from this Christmas Eve 2021, masks will be mandatory again. “We know that they protect from the spread of aerosols,” argues the head of Health, who recalls that this measure was “relaxed” in June but that the covid pandemic – spurred by the omnicron variant – led the Government to “retake it.”

The decree approved by the Council of Ministers this Thursday establishes that citizens over the age of six will have to wear a mask again in outdoor spaces for public use or open to the public. Asked about specific examples in different urban and rural outdoor spaces, Darias mentioned that “if you are in a city and you go out to do sports” you do not have to wear a mask, nor if you go for a walk “on a beach and you can keep your distance”. On the other hand, you have to take it in a rural setting “if you are in a square”.

  • Therefore, there will be mandatory again in these cases:

  • Closed spaces for public use (library, museums, etc.)

  • Closed spaces open to the public (supermarket, pharmacy, etc.)

  • Public transport of any type and complementary private transport of up to 9 seats if you are not living together

Two exceptions

Sánchez himself already warned that there would be exceptions. “We are going to incorporate some caveats when we are doing sport and also when we are in natural spaces, be it the mountain, be it the beach and, obviously, when we are alone or with our family unit or with someone who is not from our family unit but with a distance of 1.5 meters “, according to the chief executive.

Thus, there are two cases where it will not be necessary to wear the mask.

  • The practice of individual sport.

  • The stay in natural spaces when the minimum safety distance of 1.5 meters can be maintained with other people who do not live together.
