Open Streets Windsor 2021 will take place on October 17, Mayor Drew Dilkens announced Wednesday.

“One of Windsor’s favorite annual community traditions. I am certainly happy to welcome him back this year, ”Dilkens said at a press conference at Ford City Parkette on Drouillard Road, the easternmost limit of the designated route for the event.

The 2020 edition of Open Streets Windsor was canceled due to COVID-19 precautions, a decision Dilkens said was “absolutely the right thing to do,” given the circumstances at the time.

This year COVID-19 protocols such as physical distancing will be implemented, as well as personal protective equipment for volunteers and event staff.

As in previous editions, Open Streets Windsor 2021 will run from Sandwich Street in the far west to Ford City in the far east.

The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a four-hour period, during which no cars will be allowed on the route except at a few key intersections.

There will be eight activity centers along the route, each with opportunities for arts, culture, education, live entertainment, and participatory fun for all ages.

The event is intended to encourage active transportation methods, such as walking and biking.

Because this year’s event date falls two weeks before Halloween, the public is invited to attend dressed up or with seasonally appropriate decorations.

“Have fun and show us your best, but remember, safety comes first,” said Michelle Staadegaard, city manager of culture and events.

Costumes must not limit mobility or obstruct the wearer’s view.

Open Streets Windsor started in 2016 and initially had more hours.

Staadegaard said the current format of four hours of time dedicated to the event without car traffic was decided with input from organizers and community partners.

“The road closures actually start at 9 am… and will be open again at 3 pm We seemed to have hit a very good mark for the organizers of our activities,” he said.

Although the focus of the event is free outdoor recreation, many Windsor business owners will benefit from increased foot traffic.

John Alvarez, co-owner of hospitality group F&B (Grand Cantina, Taloola Cafe, Slices Pizza and the new Funky Chow Kitchen), said he is excited that Open Streets Windsor will present the public with more opportunities to support local businesses. “Things are looking up and I’m very optimistic about how things are going.”
