Ontario reports 577 new COVID cases, more than 60 percent in unvaccinated people

Ontario reports another 577 COVID-19 cases and seven more deaths. Of the seven, one death occurred more than a month ago and was added to the cumulative count due to a data cleanup. according to the latest report from the province released Tuesday morning.

Ontario has administered 28,657 vaccine dose since its last daily update, with 21,212,026 vaccinations administered in total at 8 pm the night before.

According to Star’s vaccine tracker, 11,016,595 people in Ontario have received at least one injection. That’s roughly 84.5 percent of the eligible population 12 and older, and the equivalent of 74.1 percent of the total population, including those who are not yet eligible for the vaccine.

The province says 10,195,431 people have completed their vaccinations, meaning they have received both doses. That works out to roughly 78.2 percent of the eligible population ages 12 and older, and the equivalent of 68.6 percent of the total population, including those who are not yet eligible for the vaccine.

The province now includes new data that reflects hospitalizations and cases by vaccination status. Ontario cautions that the new process may cause discrepancies between other hospitalization numbers that are collected through a different process, and that the data may not match daily COVID-19 case counts.

New data from the province reports that 349 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in unvaccinated people, 54 were partially vaccinated, and 125 cases were fully vaccinated. Again, the province cautions that the data may not match daily COVID case counts because records with a missing or invalid health card number cannot be linked.

The seven-day average is 717 daily cases, or 34.5 per 100,000 per week. Ontario’s seven-day average for deaths is 10.1 per day.

The province says 21,133 tests were completed the day before and a positivity rate of 2.3 percent.

There are currently 363 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province, including 166 patients currently in intensive care testing positive for COVID-19. There are 119 people with fans.

Locally, Ontario reports 116 new cases in Toronto, 67 in the Peel region, 54 in Windsor-Essex, and 46 in the York region.

Meanwhile, one more resident in long-term care has died totaling 3,805 since the pandemic began, in the latest report published by the province.

Ontario reports one fewer long-term care home in the outbreak, for a total of seven or 1.1 percent of LTC homes in the province.

These data are self-reported by long-term care homes to the Ministry of Long-Term Care. The daily case and death figures may not immediately match the figures published by local public health units due to delays in reporting time.

There are 146,455 confirmed cases in Ontario of the Alpha variant first detected in the UK, an increase of three from the previous day.

There are 1,502 Ontario cases of the Beta variant first detected in South Africa, with one more reported than the day before.
