One million pesos to support women in the area of technology

In Mexico, women experience a barrier to develop efficiently in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

This is demonstrated by the figures: Despite the fact that the participation of women in these disciplines has grown by more than 40% in the last decade, only three out of ten professionals in this industry are female, and only 12% are employers, barely one for every seven men. Clearly men continue to hold the majority of senior positions in science and receive the majority of research funding.

Faced with this scenario, for the first time Thomshon Reuters and Ironhack have set to work to transform this situation by offering support for a scholarship program for women in technology. They are convinced that women continue to be underrepresented, and that the only way to eliminate these historical barriers, where they have been given other roles and opportunities to choose science and technology as a way of life have been taken away, is to create options for support.

It is an initiative open to women from all over Mexico to promote their participation in technology careers and jobs, covering from 15% to 50% of the cost of two Ironhack bootcamps: UX/UI Design or Data Analytics. These courses begin on May 30 and end on July 29 of this year and the calls to participate are still open.

The organizers share that to apply for the scholarships it is necessary to respond to a form before May 25; Once the data is filled in, they will receive an email with the link to a study material and a technical test that they must complete online. If they pass, they will have to send a two-minute video in English to answer three questions about their professional experience and their goals with the program.

In Mexico, according to IMCO data, of 10,000 high school students, only 6% said they were interested in studying a STEM career, in 2021 only 13.5% of professional women are graduates of these careers.

This call invites any woman over the age of 18 to apply. “It will not be her experience that will be evaluated, but her potential as candidates. The only requirement will be to have conversational English, a key skill in the technology sector and essential to communicate throughout the program with representatives of Thomson Reuters and Ironhack, companies with a global presence”, the organizers explain.

Steps for the scholarship

The scholarship winners will receive a confirmation email and will be announced through the social networks of both companies on Saturday, May 28. You can only apply once to the scholarship and the technical test. During the application period, the dates for each phase will be as follows:

Scholarship Application: May 6-25.

Technical test resolution: May 20 to 26.

Personal interview: May 22 to 27.

Results: May 28.

What is gained by obtaining the scholarship?

The organizers of the event assure that these camps have transformed the lives of more than 10,000 technology professionals, improving their job opportunities in the technology industry, even if they had never worked in it. On average, graduates of this tech training organization have increased their income by at least 30% within a year of completing their studies.

Companies such as Google, Visa, Konfio, Twitter, Capgemini and other technology giants have hired Ironhack graduate profiles, which has a network of more than 600 partners in different parts of the world, becoming a key ally of the startup ecosystem.

For its part, Thomson Reuters is a trusted global technology and information company for professionals in the legal, tax and accounting sectors that has more than 500,000 clients, including most of the Fortune 500 companies. The bootcamp gives you the opportunity to work in the ranks of the same company, which has a global impact.

Despite some progress, to date only 33% of researchers worldwide are women, according to the most recent UNESCO scientific report. For this reason, initiatives to develop capacities with a gender perspective are essential and cannot be wasted. This is a call for young women across the country to take advantage of the scholarship and change their outlook regarding their future career in STEM fields.
