A person has died and another has been injured and is in serious condition after an explosion in a carpentry at around 2 am this Saturday in Castellcir (Moianès, Barcelona).
The explosion occurred due to a fire in a building in the municipality and the Mossos have opened an investigation to clarify the facts, sources from the Catalan police have explained to Europa Press. Apparently, as explained by the mayor of the town in statements to TV-3, Eduard Guiteras.
Guiteras has also specified that the dead person he was a retired man that he lived on the floor immediately above the burned carpentry, and that according to the investigations he could have died of suffocation due to inhaled smoke. As for the seriously injured, the mayor explained that he is the owner of the premises, who sometimes spent the night in the carpentry. After the incident, he was transferred seriously injured to the Vall d’Hebron Hospital, where he remains admitted to the burn unit.

According to Guiteras, the firefighters have explained to him that the main hypothesis about the explosion revolves around a butane cylinder that was in the premises, and that it caused the fire and burns in the wounded man. The mayor has also explained that the incident is causing problems in the supply of electricity and internet, because some cables would have been affected in the area of the deflagration.
The Castellcir Town Hall has decreed two days of municipal mourning for the death of the neighbor of the municipality and has transferred, in a tweet collected by Europa Press, “all the support and respect for the families and people affected.”
