On the rise, political violence vs women

Authorities from the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic, the National Electoral Institute (INE) and the Judicial Branch of the Federation, recognized that political violence against women due to gender is serious and on the increase, and they committed to greater coordination to attend the cases.

During the Third Regional Forum on results, good practices and prospects for actions to prevent and care for political violence against women based on gender during the 2020-2021 Electoral Process, Laura Liselotte Correa de la Torre, head of the Technical Unit of Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination of the INE, said that due to behaviors that occurred during the 2020-2021 electoral process, around 126 people (99 men and 14 women) were registered in the National Registry of Persons Sanctioned for Political Violence against Women by reason of Gender, of which 113 were sanctioned. He highlighted that the largest number of cases occurred in Oaxaca and Veracruz.

María de los Ángeles Lozano, General Director of Criminal Policy and Engagement in Electoral Crimes of the FGR, said that the conduct against women ranges from threatening them “to causing the death of her or one of her relatives”, in order to that they do not exercise their political rights.
