Ohio man among ‘American Ninja Warrior’ contestants

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A Cincinnati man is among the contestants on NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior,” as an Olympic gold medalist and former NFL player made an appearance on the show.

Justin Miniard entered the show’s contest list on Monday. He previously made a run in the series in 2019 at the Cincinnati qualifying round and cleared two obstacles before falling onto the “Swivel Bridge,” according to Ninja guide.

The network shared a clip from Monday’s episode featuring fan-favorite couple Andrew East and Shawn Johnson. The episode marks the former NFL player’s return to the field with his Olympic gymnast wife watching her performance with “ANW” co-hosts Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbajabiamila.

“This guy was awesome when he ran the course last year,” Iseman said at the start of the segment. “Unfortunately for him, he is only the second best athlete in his house. We are here on the stand joined by Olympic gold medalist and Andrew’s wife, Shawn Johnson.”

When Gbajabiamila asked Johnson if she had been helping her husband train by “showing him a little bit” of her gymnastics background, she simply replied “No.”

In preparation for the first hurdle, East takes off his shirt, a move he later explains to reporter Zuri Hall on the sidelines by saying, “I thought that was the hurdle I was going to fall into, honestly, so it was just to save money.” clothing. ”

Although East doesn’t make it to the end of the course this year, he vowed to try again next season and even get Johnson involved beyond the hosts’ tower.

“It’s a lot of fun, it’s good to be back and I’m going to try to get my wife to do it next year,” he told Hall.

Johnson responded to an excited Iseman and Gbajabiamila with, “Sure, I’ll try.”

Watch “American Ninja Warrior” on Monday, June 20 at 8 pm on NBC4.
