To avoid a similar scene in their backyards, plumbing experts are reminding residents to check their gutters before the next forecast downpour.

“If we know it’s going to rain, just double check,” said Jeff Wiebe, mechanical project manager at KB Heating, Plumbing & Air Conditioning. “Don’t go out in the rain when there’s a danger of falling, but when it’s safe, go upstairs and check that the downspouts and gutters aren’t full of leaves.”

With temperatures expected to rise again this week, Wiebe adds that now is a good time to make sure your sump pump is working properly.

“Even if it’s not raining, the groundwater at that water table could still be quite high,” Wiebe said.

“Making sure those floats are working and have power and there aren’t any issues that are discovered later once they stop working.”

Recent precipitation has also had an impact on the river bottom.

Riley McLaren, a member of the Lethbridge Fire and EMS water rescue team, is seeing water levels in the Oldman River return to seasonal averages.

“Number two is to have a plan, so tell your partner, a friend, anyone, ‘This is what I’m doing, where I’m going and when and where I’m going.'”

He added that it should always be taken into account that the conditions of the river can change from day to day.
